The world can drag us away from God in many ways: romance, money, friends, beauty, and other ways to make our existence feel real. These things in themselves are not necessarily bad (cutting or shooting yourself is, of course, a terrible thing to do), but when we pursue them above Jesus, we fall into a trap.
